Irlanninsusikoiranarttu painaa noin 50-60 kg, uros noin 70-80 kg. Esimerkiksi Ryyn paino vielä kasvavana juniorina on 55 kg, Sintti on nartuksi iso ja se painaa 65 kg. Juoksukilpailuissa kisaavat koirat ovat kisakunnossa painoltaan skaalan kevyemmässä päässä, mutta rakenteeltaan kisaavien irlanninsusikoirienkaan ei tulisi olla kevyitä - pitäisihän niiden pystyä peittoamaan susi metsästystilanteessa. 

An Irish wolfhound bitch weighs about 50-60 kg, a male about 70-80 kg. For example, as a growing junior, Ryy weighs 55 kg, while Sintti is big for a bitch and weighs 65 kg. Dogs competing in sighthound races are at the lighter end of the scale in terms of weight, but Irish wolfhounds competing in racing should not be light either - they should be able to beat a wolf in a hunting situation.

Irlanninsusikoira on maailman suurin koirarotu.  Nartun säkäkorkeus on useimmiten 70-80 cm luokkaa, uroksen yli 80 cm, jopa 90 cm. Säkäkorkeudeltaan metriset koirat ovat enimmäkseen legendaa. Rotumääritelmässä minimikorkeudeksi nartuilla on sanottu 71 cm ja uroksilla 81 cm.

The Irish Wolfhound is the largest dog breed in the world. The bitch's height at the withers is usually around 70-80 cm, the male's over 80 cm, up to 90 cm. Dogs with a height of more than a metre are mostly urban legends. In the breed standard, the minimum height is 71 cm for bitches and 81 cm for males.

Omat koirani syövät pääasiassa nappularuokaa ja lisänä lihaa. Yksi koira syö noin litran päivässä. Ikä luonnollisesti vaikuttaa ravinnon tarpeeseen. Tärkeintä on saada laadukasta ruokaa, jossa on tarpeelliset vitamiinit ja kivennäisaineet. Kasvattaja osaa parhaiten neuvoa ruokintaan liittyvissä asioissa.

My dogs eat mainly kibble with meat on the side. One dog eats about a litre per day. Age naturally has an effect on the nutritional requirements. Irlanninsusikoirien keski-ikä on isona rotuna lyhyempi kuin pienten rotujen. Keski-ikää on kuitenkin vaikea sanoa, koska siihen vaikuttavat niin monet tekijät. Omistani Varjo kuoli alle 7,5-vuotiaana  ja Laava 8,5-vuotiaana, mutta olen tavannut yli 10-vuotiaitakin irliksiä. Minulle on tärkeää, että koira pystyy elämään täyttä elämää koko elämänsä ajan ja se toteutuu irlanninsusikoirilla hyvin. Irlanninsusikoirilla ei pääsääntöisesti ole perussairauksia, kuten allergioita, luusto-ongelmia tai epilepsiaa. Yleisiä ennenaikaisen kuoleman syitä ovat luusyöpä, keuhkokuume ja tietyt sydänsairaudet. 

As a large breed, the average age of Irish wolfhounds is shorter than that of small breeds. However, the average age is difficult to say because it is influenced by so many factors. Of my own dogs, Varjo died when she was less than 7.5 years old and Laava died when she was 8.5 years old. However, I have also met wolfhounds over 10 years old. It is important to me that a dog can live a full life throughout its life and Irish wolfhounds usually can. Basically, Irish wolfhounds do not have any underlying diseases such as allergies, bone or joint problems or epilepsy. Common causes of premature death are bone cancer, pneumonia and certain heart diseases.

On se. Irlanninsusikoirien kuuluu olla kilttejä. Ne ovat kuitenkin myös koiria, eikä kenenkään koiran tarvitsisi sietää yhtäkkisiä kosketuksia varsinkaan vierailta ihmisiltä tai koirilta. Kysythän siis aina omistajalta ja koiralta rapsutuslupaa. Ja muista, että vaikka irliksen pää onkin korkealla, oikea tapa lähestyä koiraa on kuonon alapuolelta, ei pään päältä. 

It is. Irish wolfhounds are supposed to be kind. But they are also dogs, and no dog should have to tolerate sudden touches, especially from people or dogs they don't know. Vinttikoirat ovat nopeita, joskaan irlanninsusikoirat eivät ole niistä nopeimpia. Varjon kanssa olen ajanut kilpaa moottorikelkalla ja mittari näytti 43 km/h. Irlanninsusikoirat juoksevat nopeita spurtteja ja ne pystyvätkin varsin räjähtäviin lähtöihin.

Sighthounds are fast, although Irish wolfhounds are not the fastest of them. I've raced Varjo on a snowmobile and the speedometer read 43 km/h. Irish wolfhounds run fast sprints and are capable of quite explosive starts.

Irlanninsusikoiran turkin kuuluu olla karhea. Se ei kerää roskaa ja päällyskarva pitää myös vettä. Turkki pidetään siistinä harjaamalla ja nyppimällä. 

Irish wolfhounds are wire-coated so it should feel rough. It does not collect dirt and the outer coat also keeps the dog dry. The coat is kept clean by brushing and plucking.

Irlanninsusikoiralla, kuten monella muullakin vinttikoiralla on ruusukorvat. Niiden siis kuuluukin olla taitettuna kauniisti päätä myöten. Irlanninsusikoiran korvat ovat usein varsin eläväiset ja niiden liikkeistä voi päätellä paljon. Lisäksi varsinkin pentujen korvat voivat olla melkoiset propelit ja pyörähdellä eri asentoihin, kunnes ne asettuvat koiran kasvaessa.

The Irish wolfhound, like many other greyhounds, has rose ears. They should be folded nicely. Irish wolfhounds' ears are often quite lively and you can tell a lot from the way they move. In addition, the ears, especially in puppies, can be quite a propeller, rotating into different positions until they settle as the dog grows.
